Move aside, miniskirts—this year, it was all about the denim maxi. From Khaite and Prada to Altuzarra and Raey, this fresh way to wear denim has been an instant hit among stylish showgoers outside of Fashion Week a well as celebrities like Gigi Hadid. Choose a classic light-wash denim or a darker route and expect sartorial success each and every time.

The Row Ava leather Mary Jane flats

Totême leather-trimmed shearling jacket

This year marked the reintroduction of the Mary Jane, with the coolest pairs coming from The Row, Tory Burch, Aeyde, and Miu Miu. This new take on the feminine ballerina flat has been made to resemble a more cool-girl aesthetic rather than a girly-girl one. Each brand offers a version of the shoe with a thinner-than-usual strap, a small design element that brings a strong styling impact. From the runways to the streets, this is one statement shoe style that has reigned supreme in 2022.

No 2022 trend recap could be complete without the mention of the Birkenstock Boston clog, made famous on TikTok and among the street style set. The cozy slip-on, which comes in a classic suede or shearling lined, has been one wardrobe staple with an extremely limited shelf life. (So get yours while you can!)

With 2022 drawing to a close, naturally it’s a time for reflection personally, professionally, and in this case, sartorially. When it comes to our shopping habits, most of us can say we prefer to stick to the basics, favoring a strong foundation of wardrobe essentials over more fashion-forward finds. That said—and because it’s fashion we’re obsessed with, after all—sometimes the trends are just too irresistible to resist.

Undoubtedly, 2022 has been the year of Adidas, whether it be its many collaborations with luxury fashion houses like Gucci and Wales Bonner or the insurmountable popularity of its Gazelle and Samba sneakers. The classic shoe style has been adored by everyone from showgoers at Fashion Week to celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Kaia Gerber. Other heritage brands also saw success, from New Balance to Nike. A luxury option from Loewe cannot be ignored either.

We can thank Emily Ratajkowski, Hailey Bieber, and more for making us fall in love with cargo pants this year. And while the utility pant doesn’t exactly scream whimsical wardrobe must-have, chic cargos from the Frankie Shop, Reformation, Bottega Veneta, and Stand Studio make a strong case. What’s more is that these street style darlings prove that the staple can be worn in many different ways, from elevating a basic cropped T-shirt to partnering with statement winter coats.

When seeking out the season’s hottest trends, the runways aren’t the only place to source sartorial inspiration. The street style spotted in between each show or event is equally as inspiring and also telling of what our fashion future has in store. Of the top trends from New York Fashion Week 2022, we couldn’t help but notice the slew of sleek leather midiskirts worn time and again by some of fashion’s chicest insiders. Must-have midis from Altuzarra, Raey, Petar Petrov, and Isabel Marant are perfect picks.

When Kate Moss stepped out onto the Bottega Veneta spring 2023 runway in a simple plaid shacket and baggy jeans, a sartorial sensation quickly followed suit. Her look was the epitome of chic and casual daywear—who could ever resist? Re-create her effortless look with the help of these perfect plaid picks from A.P.C., Isabel Marant Étoile, Fortela, and Anine Bing.

Another It item designers and street stylers are standing behind this year, you might ask? A wish-list–worthy Western boot. The style has had a lasting effect—it first took the summer by storm as one of the top street style trends spotted at Copenhagen Fashion Week and has been worn by such celebrities as Kendall Jenner and Emily Ratajowski. From contemporary brands Reformation and Ganni to luxury labels like Khaite, the cowboy boot is our shoe style of choice to giddyap in.

2022 marks the year that Hailey Bieber launched her capsule wardrobe collection in collaboration with Wardrobe.NYC. Of the collab’s hottest ticket items is this oversized double-breasted blazer. The new take on tailoring has clearly been a hit, with similar styles popping up from Everlane, LouLou Studio, and Mango.

Cutout dresses rose to fame this fall and winter thanks to UK-based designer Nensi Dojaka, whose spring 2023 show sparked a sartorial sensation. (It also doesn’t hurt that Hailey Bieber is a big fan of the style.) Christopher Esber is equally as known for the dare-to-bare dress, while this one from Staud may be less expected yet all the more welcome. Jewel-tone cutout dresses from Coperni and Maygel Coronel make the perfect party dresses.

We said goodbye to our skinny jeans this year in favor of big, baggy jeans instead. Thanks to stylish stars such as Emily Ratajkowski, Tracee Ellis Ross, Jennifer Lawrence, Katie Holmes, and more, roomy and wide-leg denim has proved to be much more preferred than its straight-leg counterpart. The top-shopped items of 2022 span a wide range, all of which were backed by either the runway or the street or even by our favorite celebs like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber. It’s important to also note that many of the trends we saw this year took on a welcome twist to some of our go-to wardrobe essentials—think baggier, better denim; pairs of stylish sneakers; timeless tailoring; trendy tank tops; and more. Of the trendier pieces, there are, of course, a few that come to mind first: the suit vest, which not only has the editor seal of approval but the street style one too; the Mary Jane that captured the hearts of everyone from The Row to Tory Burch; the built-in-scarf coat courtesy of Scandinavian brands  Totême and Remain Birger Christensen; the plaid shacket, which Kate Moss infamously debuted on the Bottega Veneta spring 2023 runway; and dare-to-bare dresses from Nensi Dojaka that redefined the going-out dress. What’s even better is that you can (and should) carry all of these top-shopped items of 2022 into 2023 and beyond.

Logo-adorned tank tops were the It item to be had among the street style set this year. With honorable mention going to Prada and Loewe, these ribbed, scooped-neck tanks have officially reached cult-status potential. And after long being out of stock, the trendy tops are finally back on the market. Other options for the more minimally minded include these from Totême and Nili Lotan.

Of the top winter coat trends, standout shearling coats and jackets are season champs. The beauty of a shearling coat is that it delivers both comfort and style, while still allowing the other aspects of your outfit—say a knit dress or a statement sweater—to shine. Plus their timeless reputation makes them the perfect investment piece—an important fact to consider when shopping for items that you can love and own for years, and perhaps even pass down one day. From Stand Studio’s floor-length stunner to aviator-inspired jackets from Mango and Zara, a shearling coat or jacket has the power to elevate any outfit. If you’re still not convinced, find Totême’s leather-trimmed jacket, adorned with lobster clasps down the bodice.

With brands like The Row and Cos in our back pocket, it’s no surprise that something as classic as a crewneck sweater has dominated our shopping carts in 2022. What makes these all the more special is that they add a welcome pop of color to any piece of timeless tailoring or when layered atop a winter white jean. This year also marked the launch of Gigi Hadid’s notable knitwear brand, Guest in Residence, which includes a wide range of cozy, colorful cashmere meant to last for years not just seasons.

Loafers, in all their forms, are a timeless wardrobe essential. This season, however, chunky lug-sole styles are the undeniable standout, pairing well with everything from miniskirts and dresses to lived-in denim and tailored trousers. This twist on the traditional features a toothy rubber sole, which is ideal for navigating the wintry weather to come. Chunky loafers are also celebrity approved: Supermodel Hailey Bieber is one of their biggest fans. Styles from Gucci and Prada to Reformation and Vagabond Shoemakers are winners.

This year has proved that a matching knitwear set is just as comfortable as your favorite sweats and is 10 times chicer. The cozy outfit combination epitomizes a fuss-free approach to dressing no matter which route you choose, whether it’s a matching cashmere set from The Row or Tory Burch’s knitted skirt set. Both labels prioritize creating wearable clothing that’s beautiful, timeless, and—most important—comfortable.

Ultrachic coats that come equipped with built-in scarves have been at the top of everyone’s shopping list since their debut this fall and winter. Most notably from Scandinavian brands Totême and Remain Birger Christensen, the scarf coat is a two-in-one winter wardrobe essential that never seems to stay on the shelf for long. Other options include The Row’s Evia belted coat and a classic camel version from Tove.

What has everyone been buying these days? Thanks to Bottega Veneta (whose earrings have since sold out) and Kendall Jenner, teardrop earrings, of course. Similar styles can be found here from Elsa Peretti, Mejuri, Kenneth Jay Lane, and Dean Davidson.

This fall, we nominated the suit vest as the season’s must-have item due to its gleaming popularity among not only the street style set but Vogue’s very own. Once a classic menswear garment, suit vests from Mango, Zara, Raey, and the Frankie Shop are reimagined in chic, flattering silhouettes that add a depth of formality to any outfit. Clearly, this has been the year where tailoring has triumphed.

A perennial staple in the lightweight outerwear category is the bomber jacket, of course, which we’ve seen take off among our favorite street stylers this year. Oversized, cropped, croc-embellished, or colorful, each of these bomber jackets is a prized piece of smart-casual outerwear to wear for seasons ahead.

If fashion trends, like the moon, experience phases, then this year is undoubtedly the season of the moon bags rising. The defining feature of a moon bag is a curvaceous body; the two ends of the bag must round upward and inward, creating an almost circular shape. The Row’s ivory Half Moon leather shoulder bag is obviously a must, as is Bottega Veneta’s Teen Jodie bag. Khaite is also synonymous with the style, and we can’t forget options from the high street, either, like this one from & Other Stories.
